Abstract: Du Bois singularities are a class of singularities that appear naturally in Hodge theory. In this talk, I will overview several criteria which imply Du Bois singularities, as well as some of the good properties that varieties with Du Bois singularities enjoy. I will finish the talk by discussing a sheaf which measures how far a (Cohen-Macaulay) variety is from being Du Bois including some recent work with O. Fujino and S. Takagi.
