Abstract. This introduction to algebraic stacks starts by motivating the definition using some simple examples. In the second part a classical application of the concept, probably the irreducibility of the moduli
space of curves of fixed genus, is presented. The third part will explain, through an example, how one can use Artin's criteria to prove that a given moduli problem defines an algebraic stack.
