Abstract: This talk, intended for a general audience, will survey some of the ideas which led to the development of Intersection cohomology. After quoting some of its most striking properties (duality, purity), I will describe a few contexts in which Intersection cohomology plays a big role, such as toric varieties and geometry of Schubert cells.
